Green Reel: Black Gold

Green Reel is a film series hosted by Congregation Agudas Achim in Attleboro. Sustainable living is the organizing theme of this occasional series, with each film followed by a facilitated discussion. On January 30, the film will be Black Gold, which described the conventional and fair-trade coffee models from the point of view of Ethiopian farmers. In the land where coffee first originated, some producers of gourmet-quality coffee are frequently on the verge of starvation. This gripping film examines how this is possible.

First Parish member James Hayes-Bohanan will be leading a discussion following the film, and will be serving both regular and decaf coffee from Ethiopia. (Because no beverages are allowed in the sanctuary, the coffee will be served after the film.) Students who participated in the coffee study tour James recently led in Nicaragua will also be available for questions.

All films in this occasional series are shown on Sundays at 7:00 pm at Agudas Achim at 901 North Main Street in Attleboro. See dates and titles for the series and directions to the temple.

For information about other films related to coffee and tea, see James' Coffee and Tea in Film page.

Fight hunger on MLK Day

Children from Brockton and Bridgewater work together to fight hunger on Martin Luther King Day

Recognizing that hunger is a real issue in our community, the children of Messiah Baptist Church in Brockton and of First Parish Unitarian-Universalist Church in Bridgewater are teaming up to help. They plan to conduct a food drive over the next month, gathering donations from their respective churches and from the community at large. They will then work in tandem with the food pantry at Messiah Baptist to shop for, package, and distribute food to those in need.  Approximately 30 children, ages 3-16, will participate in this inspiring project, entitled We Can Help: A Child's Response to Citizenship and Community.

The project will begin on MLK Day, Monday, January 17. Please follow this blog for more information, as the children develop ideas for involving adults of their respective churches as well as the broader community.
